Experience (EXP)

Guide
In short: every monster you kill pays experience (EXP). Stronger monsters pay much more, a party pays more than hunting alone, and Golden Member adds 35 %. Each level needs more EXP than the one before, and dying to a monster costs about 1 % of a level.

The thin strip at the very bottom of the screen is your EXP toward the next level. Point at it to read "EXP: what you have / what the next level needs". The character window (C) shows the same numbers.

What one kill pays

The original game's rule: a monster of level L is worth (L + 25) x L / 3 EXP. Monsters of level 65 and up add (L - 64) x L / 4 on top. A kill then pays between 1 and 1.5 times that, 1.25 times on average, so no two kills are quite the same.

So the EXP of a monster grows with the square of its level. A monster twice as high pays about three and a half times as much.

Example: a Yeti is level 30. A character up to level 40 gets about 688 EXP for each one, between 550 and 825.

Hitting a monster together without a party: everyone who hit it gets EXP for their part of the damage. If you dealt half its life, you get half its EXP.

When you are far above the monster

The original game's rule: once you are more than 10 levels above a monster, its EXP is multiplied by (its level + 10) / your level. The further above it you are, the less each kill pays.

Example: at level 150 a Kentauros (level 108) pays about 6,193 a kill instead of 7,470. At level 290, where it is a fair fight, it pays about 3,920. That is still far more than a low monster pays, so hunt the highest monsters you can kill safely.

Monsters above your level pay a bonus

Moo Classic: a monster more than 10 levels above you pays extra EXP, up to half as much again. In a party the bonus counts the party's highest level.

Example: a level 30 character who kills a level 50 monster gets 20 % more than the table above shows: about 1,875 instead of 1,562.

The two worlds

The High XP Test world is for trying builds, items and drops in hours. Characters there are separate from the main world. Zen and item drops do not follow the EXP rate on either world.

Party EXP

When a party member kills a monster, everyone who shares it gets EXP. A member shares the kill if they are alive, on the same map and less than 10 tiles from the monster. A member further away gets nothing and does not count for the bonus.

The original game's rule, step by step:

  1. The monster's EXP is worked out for the average level of the members who share, with the far-above rule.
  2. The party bonus multiplies it: the table below.
  3. The total is split by level. A level 100 member gets twice the share of a level 50 member.

The mixed-class bonus counts each class line: a Soul Master counts as a Dark Wizard, a Blade Knight as a Dark Knight, a Muse Elf as an Elf.

Example: two level 50 players kill a level 40 monster together. Alone, one of them would get about 1,083. Together the kill is worth 160 %, about 1,733, and each gets 867. If the two of them kill twice as fast as one, each earns 1.6 times as much EXP an hour as hunting alone.
Example: a level 50 Dark Wizard, Dark Knight and Elf kill the same monster. The kill is worth 230 %, about 2,492, and each gets about 831. A party of three without the mix gets 180 %, about 650 each.

Golden Member

A Golden Member gets 35 % more EXP from every kill and every party share, on both worlds. A crown on the bar shows it is running.

Example: a kill that pays 1,000 EXP pays a Golden Member 1,350. At a spot where you earn 10,000 EXP a minute, Golden Member makes it 13,500.

Golden monsters and the Golden Moo

Moo Classic: golden monsters pay 10 times the EXP of a normal monster of their level. That counts for the Golden Goblin, Golden Titan, Golden Soldier, Golden Dragon and the other golden monsters of the Golden Invasion.

The Golden Moo and the Elite Golden Moo pay EXP for every hit, not for the kill. Your EXP is your part of the damage times what the whole Moo is worth to your level. Twice a day they come to Devias Wasteland and Promiseland; see New bosses and event monsters.

A bar is a tenth of a level, one notch of the EXP strip.

Example: a level 347 player who deals a fifth of an Elite Golden Moo's damage gains about two bars. A level 50 who hits it for ten minutes, about 1 % of its life, gains about half a level.

A Golden Cowbell brings a Golden Moo of your own while you hunt.

Events

Event How it pays EXP
Blood Castle Everyone in the castle when the gate and the statue break, EXP for each second left at the end, and more for the winners. The guide has the numbers for each castle
Devil Square The 4 highest-ranked players are paid EXP and zen at the end
Chaos Castle Every kill: 500 a player and 1,000 a monster in castle 1, up to 3,000 and 3,500 in castle 6
Invasions Golden monsters pay 10 times the EXP of their level
Example: in Chaos Castle 6, 1 player kill and 98 monster kills give about 346,000 EXP.

Other ways to earn more

  • Golden Member (+35 %) is the only EXP boost you can buy. There are no EXP scrolls or seals in Moo Classic.
  • A party of the right size and classes: up to 300 % of a kill, shared.
  • Higher monsters: the EXP of a monster grows with the square of its level. Hunt the highest spot you can clear without dying.
  • Bigger stacks: more monsters close together means more kills a minute. Area skills such as Evil Spirit or Twisting Slash pay off most there.
  • Not dying: each death costs about 1 % of a level, and the walk back costs time.
Example: a level 110 character alone at a Lost Tower spot earns about 11,800 EXP a minute. With Golden Member it is about 16,000, and in a party of two that kills twice as fast about 19,000 each.

Dying costs EXP

When a monster kills you, you lose a part of the EXP between your current level and the next. You never drop below the start of your level, so you never lose a level. This follows the original game.

No EXP is lost when another player kills you, inside Blood Castle, Devil Square or Chaos Castle, or at level 400.

Example: at level 150 the next level needs 697,420 EXP, so a death costs about 6,974. At Outlaw stage 1 it costs about 34,871.

EXP needed for each level

The original game's table: reaching level L takes 10 x (L + 8) x (L - 1) x (L - 1) EXP in total. From level 257 a second, steeper part adds 1,000 x (L - 247) x (L - 256) x (L - 256).

In plain words: the EXP a level needs grows with the square of the level. Level 100 needs about 4 times what level 50 needs, and level 200 about 4 times level 100.

After level 256 the second part makes each level much longer. Level 300 needs about 5 times what level 255 needs, and level 399 another 7 times that.

Example: level 160 needs 791,920 EXP to reach 161. Atlans 3 monsters of level 66 to 68 pay a level 160 about 1,299 each, so that level takes about 610 kills there.

EXP a minute: examples

These are examples, worked out for one player at a busy spot: the kills a minute a character of that level makes there in fitting gear, times what each kill pays. Your own numbers depend on your build, skills and how busy the spot is.

Example: at level 70 the Elite Yetis pay about 8,500 EXP a minute, and the level needs 157,420: about 19 minutes. With Golden Member about 14 minutes. On the High XP Test world the same level takes seconds.
