Zen

Guide
In short: zen is the game's money. Monsters drop it as gold piles on the ground, you click one to pick it up, and you spend it on potions, repairs, warps, mixes and the Moo Helper. A bag and a vault each hold up to 2,000,000,000.

Quick facts

Thing Value
What it looks like A small heap of gold coins with the amount above it, such as "Zen 334"
How you pick it up Click the pile, or let the Moo Helper collect it
What a pile holds More the higher the monster's level: about 300 from a level 10 monster, 12,000 from a level 100 one
Most you can carry 2,000,000,000
Most the vault holds 2,000,000,000
On a death to a monster A share of the zen you carry is lost. The vault is safe
Where you see it The line under your bag, and "N Zen Obtained" in the chat's System view for every pile

How you get zen

  1. Kill monsters. Nearly every monster drops a pile on most kills. Crowded fields pay fastest. Making zen shows which maps drop piles most often.
  2. Sell to a merchant. A shop pays a third of what it asks for the same item, and less for gear that is worn down, up to 60 % less. A jewel or a set piece you do not need is often worth more to another player.
  3. Sell to another player. A personal store takes zen in Noria and most other places. Lorencia prices in Jewel of Bless and Devias in Moo Gold.
  4. Win events. Blood Castle pays zen to its winners, Devil Square to its best four, and the Golden Moo and the Golden Invasion drop piles of their own. See Blood Castle, Devil Square and Invasions.
  5. Open event boxes. A Box of Luck or a Heart of Love that gives no gear gives 10,000 to 100,000 zen.

How big a pile is

A pile grows with the monster's level. The table shows a typical pile for a kill at your own level. Each pile is a little smaller or bigger than the figure. Hunting a monster more than 10 levels below you shrinks it.

Monster level A typical pile
10 about 300
20 about 750
30 about 1,400
50 about 3,100
80 about 7,800
100 about 12,700
120 about 18,700
Example: a level 50 monster drops about 3,100 zen. Fifty kills in a field where most of them drop a pile earn well over 100,000 zen.

The experience rate changes how fast you level, not how much zen you find.

What zen buys

Use What it costs
Potions, arrows and scrolls Cheap at the merchants. See NPCs
Repairs A few hundred zen for low gear and over 40,000 for worn high wings. Mending yourself costs 2.5 times as much. See Durability and repair
Warps Set by map, from 2,000 zen for the first towns. See Warps
The Moo Helper Zen for every minute it runs. A level 100 character pays 120,000 for its first hour
Chaos Machine mixes A fee on every try, lost when a mix fails. Up to 5,000,000 for second level wings. See Chaos Machine
Class quests A fee for each change, up to 7,000,000. See Class quests
Trading and stores You and the other player set the amount in the trade window or the store. See Party and PK

Keeping zen safe

  • Death. A monster kill takes 1 % of the zen you carry from level 10, 2 % from level 150 and 3 % from level 220. A death to a player takes none. See Death.
  • The vault. Baz the Vault Keeper keeps zen and items for your whole account. Deposit what you do not need on your hunt.
  • The cap. Your bag and your vault each hold 2,000,000,000. A withdrawal that would push the bag over the cap is refused.

Zen in a party

Rule What happens
Default The player who picks a pile up keeps all of it
Equal sharing The leader can switch it on. Every member on the map takes a share of each pile picked up outside town
In a safe zone A pile can be picked up there too

See Party rules for the leader's settings.

Moo Classic and the original

Moo Classic changes these things about zen. Everything else works as in the original.

Original Moo Classic
A monster's pile at its base size Twice the size
Zen rises with the experience rate Zen does not follow it
One owner for a pile Equal sharing in a party, if the leader wants it
Zen in the vault on a death Never touched
Store prices in zen Zen, Jewels of Bless or Moo Gold by town
You pick every pile up yourself The Moo Helper can do it, and a Golden Member earns 25 % more
